Montana, 1924. Phil and George are brothers and partners, co-owners of the largest ranch in the valley. They ride together, transporting thousands of head of cattle, and continue to sleep in the room they had as children, in the same bronze beds. Phil is tall and angular, George stocky and unflappable. Phil is a genius and could have been anything he set his mind to, George is quiet and has no hobbies. Phil likes to provoke, George lacks a sense of humor, but he wants to love and be loved. When George marries Rose, a young widow with a proud bearing and quick smile, and brings her to live on the estate, Phil begins a relentless campaign to destroy her. But the weakest are not always who you think.
Thomas Savage was born in 1915 in Salt Lake City and grew up on a ranch in Montana. In 1980 he was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship. In 1967 he published “The Power of the Dog”, a masterpiece of American Western literature, which was brought to the big screen by Jane Campion.
