Stephen King returns to fantasy in style with a magnificent novel about an unexpected hero who must take part in the epic battle between good and evil.

WELCOME TO THE DARK SIDE
FROM ONCE UPON A TIME

Charlie Reade looks like an ordinary high school student, but he carries a heavy burden on his shoulders. When he was just ten years old, his mother was the victim of a hit-and-run accident and grief drove his father to drink. Even though he was too young, Charlie had to learn to take care of himself…and take care of his father, too.

Now seventeen, Charlie finds two unexpected friends: a dog named Radar and Howard Bowditch, her elderly owner. Mr. Bowditch is a hermit who lives on a huge hill in a large house with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes, strange sounds emerge from it.

While Charlie is running errands for Mr. Bowditch, he and Radar become inseparable. When the old man dies, he leaves the boy a cassette tape containing an incredible story and the great secret that Bowditch has kept all his life: inside his shed there is a portal that leads to another world.

Stephen King is the author of more than sixty books, all of them international bestsellers. His most recent titles are After, Blood and Blood, The Institute, Elevation, The Visitor (whose audiovisual adaptation premiered on HBO in January 2020), Gwendy’s Button Box (with Richard Chizmar), Sleeping Beauties (with his son Owen King), The Shop Around the Corner, the Bill Hodges trilogy (Mr. Mercedes, Losers Pay, and End of Watch), Revival, and Doctor Sleep. The novel 11/22/63 (turned into a television series on Hulu) was chosen by The New York Times Book Review as one of the ten best novels of 2011 and by the Los Angeles Times as the best mystery novel of the year. The books in the series The Dark Tower and It have been adapted for film, as have many of his classics, from Misery to The Shining, including Carrie, Gerald’s Game, and The Dead Zone.

In recognition of her career, she has been awarded the PEN American Literary Service Award in 2018, the National Medal of Arts in 2014, and the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters in 2003.
