About the book
Set in Madrid at the beginning of the century, during the real estate bubble and easy money, the novel tells two love stories that converge in a long chronicle of loneliness. Love and loneliness, two sides of the same coin, which have as a backdrop a city in full transformation, full of people who fight to get ahead and improve their lives by any means necessary.
Written introspectively, the story mixes issues as different as relationships of convenience, the search for happiness or strength in the face of impossible situations, with which the reader will identify. The result is a contemporary portrait of immigration, which shows the importance of helping others to the extent of one’s own possibilities.
The story of In Search of Plasterboard touches on certain current themes, such as unwanted loneliness, distrust of foreigners, class consciousness, and external and internalized homophobia.
Throughout the story, the characters’ uneasiness is felt with the situation of loneliness they live in, which they have been forced into by different circumstances. It is precisely the deep desire to escape from it that leads José Ramón, the main character, to seek experiences he has never experienced before.
And it is not only the teacher who is faced with the lack of company at home or outside of it, but this emptiness is the shadow of several characters in the work.
Loneliness, whether desired or not, is a situation that many readers will identify with, since, according to statistics, in Spain there are more than 5 million people who live alone.
