Review of “Divine Rivals”, by Rebecca Ross

TWO RIVALS

TWO STORIES

TWO HEARTS

A DESTINATION

After remaining asleep for centuries, the gods return to war…

The only thing young journalist Iris Winnow wants is to keep her family together. With a brother forced to fight on the side of the gods and missing from the front lines and a mother drowning in grief, Iris’s best option is to obtain a promotion to columnist for the Oath Gazette.

But when Iris’s letters to her brother fall into the wrong hands—those of the handsome but cold Roman Kitt, her rival at the newspaper—a strange magical connection is created.

Immersed in the center of a mystical war, armed with their typewriters, can their bond overcome the fight for the destiny of humanity and, more importantly, their love?

A fantasy novel, an epic enemies to lovers full of hope, sadness and the incomparable power of love.

Iris Winnow is devastated by her brother’s abandonment and her mother’s emotional absence as she competes for a position as a columnist with her direct rival, Roman Kitt.

She begins to write letters to her brother and even when she knows that he is not receiving them, she continues sending them, until she discovers that, in fact, there is someone receiving them, just not who she expected.

As her life slowly and increasingly falls apart, Iris finds solace in writing to this stranger who comforts her.

On the other hand, Roman Kitt, who secretly receives Iris’s letters, begins to develop new feelings for her as he gets to know her better thanks to the letters.

Soon the book takes a turn and we no longer only read the love story of two young journalists, but we enter a magical world at war.

It’s funny, when I started reading and gods and magic were mentioned, I automatically imagined a world very different from ours, but far from that, it takes place in a society practically the same as ours, with current technology and, above all, problems. current.

An example is the indifference of the inhabitants of Juramento towards a war that was practically at their doors, convinced that it would never reach them and it was not their problem, so why help, if it doesn’t affect me? And this is something that happens today, and reading it with dragons, gods and magic involved makes the logic of these inhabitants sound even more absurd. I think it was a very good review.

In addition, the novel portrays war quite emotionally, the bonds that are forged between soldiers and how fast and hectic everything is in a battle.

Iris is a character that I personally loved, she is a strong and brave woman who did not hesitate for a second to abandon her life and cross 600km and risk her life going to the front of the war to find her brother. She feels empathy, so much so that she becomes guilty when she can’t do anything for others. She is someone who feels a lot and very intensely and has been reflected very well in the narration despite being in the third person.

I think it’s definitely in my top 10 best books I’ve read this year, a fast-paced, exciting novel that has everything from romance and friendship to death and pain.
