About the book
Alejandro Gándara returns to Alfaguara with Primer amor, an initiation novel that addresses first love from his maturity as a great established writer, and which hits bookstores on February 16. The author, winner of the Nadal and Herralde awards, covers the territory in which he has confirmed himself as a great teacher: that of the complexity of human emotions. Can we love after our hearts have been broken? How many times can someone fall in love like the first time? Does the wound of that love close with time? Starring a young man who experiences his first passion, First Love addresses all these issues: the torrential violence with which falling in love arrives, the individual’s lack of resources in the face of the experience and the mark it leaves on the rest of existence. A story of love and discovery that spans almost five decades in the lives of its protagonists and the country.
«I think that since Juan Benet […] “No such powerful prose has emerged among us.”
Rafael Conte, The Country
In the throes of Francoism, Andrés lives in a city where places almost never have names. A large town somewhere in Castile in the seventies, divided by an old wall that separates the City from the suburbs. He belongs to the suburbs, but life happens more within the walls, where Brígida is, whom he loves, still secretly, with the exasperated love of eighteen years old. More than four decades later, his life has changed completely, but, although time heals everything, he cannot alone complete the stories that were left unfinished.
