Quiroga and death is a heartfelt tribute to the life and work of the Uruguayan writer Horacio Quiroga. A tribute in comic format conceived by the Spanish David Lorenzo, who is in charge of both the script and the drawing.
In my opinion, the best of the volume are the six Quiroga stories adapted by Lorenzo: “The Feather Pillow”, “The Son”, “The Mad Dog”, “The Rubber Gloves”, “The Solitaire” and “The slaughtered hen”. And these graphic versions, plot-loyal to the original stories, also enjoy the naive charm granted by Lorenzo’s visual style, characterized by forced perspectives, disproportionate bodies and extravagant color palettes.
I did not like the biographical section of the volume as much, since, given its brevity, it wastes or underexplains Quiroga’s fictional life. Even so, I must praise the success of its thematic fixation with death and the brilliant segment that goes from pages 86 to 89.
