Melina
by Juan Ramón Lucas
The new novel by the beloved television presenter, radio host and journalist
Melina, daughter of the mining and revolutionary Asturias of 1934, is born when she should not and where she is not expected: on the eve of a civil war and into a family tormented by the curse and disaffection of her father. The ravages of the war and the relentless repression that falls on her family forge the determined character of Melina, who, unresponsive to her discouragement, overcomes all obstacles. In search of the independence that geography and time cannot provide, Melina embarks on a journey across eras and seas and emigrates to America. There she will witness dramatic events that will mark her forever and that will lead to her return to a Spain trapped in the clutches of political repression. With a determination that knows no limitations, she will manage to progress and achieve success in hostile circumstances. Based on a true story, Juan Ramón Lucas once again puts his great storytelling ability and his extraordinary rigor at the service of literature when documenting his novels. Melina’s story is that of many women who, silently and constantly, marked paths on the path to equality that they never enjoyed.
