About the book

On May 13, the new Netflix series The Lincoln Lawyer, based on the novel by Michael Connelly (Philadelphia, 1956) The Verdict, premieres worldwide. Considered one of the most successful writers in the world with his works translated into forty-five languages, in this story Connelly has brought together two of his greatest characters, detective Harry Bosch and defense attorney Mickey Haller.

Haller, who has been away from the courts for some time and is called the Lincoln lawyer because he worked on his car, receives news of the murder of his colleague Jerry Vincent. At the same time, he is told that he has to take charge of the defense of Walter Elliot, a prominent movie mogul accused of murdering his wife and her lover. As he prepares to take on a case that could boost his career, Haller discovers that Vincent’s killer could be after him too. Meanwhile, Los Angeles detective Harry Bosch is determined to find Vincent’s killer and is not opposed to using Haller as bait. As the danger increases, these two loners realize their only option is to work together.

“The scenes with the two of them together were the best part of writing this book. That was the trigger, I wanted to bring them together, and since they come from different sides of the justice equation, I knew there could be some interesting dialogue and interactions between them. They are both very skilled manipulators, and at different times in the book you wonder who is manipulating whom. Those kinds of things are always fun to write,” explained this creator of detective stories, author of thirty-five novels of which he has sold 80 million copies worldwide.

Although the relationship between Haller and Bosch has a special appeal, the novel has other narrative threads that maintain interest, suspense and emotion. “The story has a lot to do with recovery and redemption, with fatherhood, with the back doors of the justice system. The latter is something I call the “material.” By this I mean the hard-to-determine things that make the world of a book seem real. “I have tried to fill this novel with anecdotes, shortcuts and maneuvers that create a harsh, if not dirty, reality of the judicial system in which Mickey works.”
