Meeting Michael Jordan was like meeting Jesus. It was like he was walking on air as he came toward me. For a kid from Akron, with no money, no father nearby, needing inspiration, Jordan was the guy. I wanted to shoot like him, wear the same shoes as him. And I wanted kids to one day look at me with the same eyes I looked at him with.
Even if LeBron never says it about himself, even though for him the best will always be Air Jordan, a former NBA star like Isiah Thomas has no doubts: he is King James the Goat, the greatest of them all. “Because we have never had a player who can combine dominance on the court with everything else like LeBron. For the first aspect, there are statistics, and numbers never lie: no one has had his performance and his consistency in all aspects of the game. Just as no one has done what he did for communities in need.”
For all these reasons, LeBron James is unique. The boy abandoned by his father and with a mother who was still sixteen, who spent his difficult childhood (“I saw everything: drugs, murders; I was crazy”) wandering between sofas and rented rooms, until he was taken in by the coach of the neighborhood football team.
Not only has he become the best in the world at his sport, basketball, a unique player, the Chosen One, but also a man who has committed his image to fight against social injustice. Here they tell of it and it is told, his unstoppable strength is told: «One day I said to myself: if you are so tired that you can no longer feel your legs, keep running; and if you feel like you are dying, run even faster». Surely the best for him, on the court and in life, is yet to come.
I will never remain silent in the face of injustice, and I will not limit myself to talking only about sports, as some people want me to. I am part of the community. I am interested in my people, in racism, in society as a whole. And I am aware of how powerful my voice is and how useful it can be.
