About the book

The women behind Picasso
Women who were much more than muses.
“While the Master was creating, these women put a hot plate of food on his table, washed his clothes, comforted his sorrows, read his correspondence, bought him art supplies, raised his daughters, and posed for him. When these activities were not carried out by his partners, it was various domestic workers who did so, so that the care work that made artistic production possible was always performed by a woman. I hope that it is now understood why limiting them to the role of muses is an insult and why reducing them to an aesthetic component in the artist’s production is a mistake. In the pages that follow, as a reader, you will find eight independent stories that tell of the lives of these women and their relationship with the painter.”

The darkest side of Picasso
Pablo Picasso is world-renowned as one of the great geniuses of painting. But behind this genius was a man who inflicted various types of violence on his partners. This book tells us, through rigorously documented fictional accounts, what the painter’s relationship with these women was like, while shedding new light on their lives and their contribution to the artist’s career.

The eight women and the eight illustrators
In the book we will meet Fernande Oliver, Eva Gouel, Olga Khokhlova, Marie-Thérèse Walter, Dora Maar, Françoise Gilot, Geneviève Laporte and Jacqueline Roque. These women, wives and partners of the painter, influenced the artist’s works and, not in the same way, the artist influenced their lives. Along with each story we will find a portrait of each woman created by different illustrators: María Hesse, Lady Desidia, Sara Herranz, Laura Agustí, Maria Herreros, Ana Santos, Isa Muguruza and Esther Gili. All of them are great artists from our country and the most followed content creators in the field of illustration. They have worked with different brands and their works have crossed oceans.
