About the book

Fulgencio and Sofia are a young Spanish couple, medical students in Boston, who return to Spain years later with a good academic experience, their children and their dog, to carry out a promising medical research: early detection of cancer through canine sense of smell. All thanks to observing the behaviour in certain situations of Rómel, the family dog.

The promising research and its positive results are being reported in the media, not only in scientific publications but also on television and in newspapers. Preliminary results demonstrate the effectiveness of the highly developed canine sense of smell in detecting tumor cells.

But fate plays against them and, on their way to Asturias to visit their family, an accident cuts short the future of the investigators. Only their daughter, Sofia, and their faithful pet, Romel, survive.

Romel is thrown from the vehicle along with his luggage and is left injured on the side of the road, where he goes unnoticed by the rescue team. Xurde, a local shepherd, picks him up and takes care of him until he can walk again. For a while, Romel stays with Xurde and his dog Luna and helps them look after the flock, defending it from the attacks of the wolves that roam the forest. But Romel needs to find “his pack of humans” and abandons the shepherd to continue his search. Sofía wakes up in the hospital after spending a few days in a coma. When she recovers, she goes to live with her maternal grandparents, but the girl does not speak. She feels such deep sorrow for her loss that she has stopped communicating with the world. Little by little, with psychological help and the strong interest of her three grandparents, Sofía improves, although she still has a long way to go. For his part, Romel lives an endless number of adventures until he reaches Madrid where, guided by his sense of smell, he arrives at the cemetery where his owners are buried and finds Sofia who, upon seeing him, says his name and clings to his neck to, together with her dog, begin to develop the duel.

This novel, an emotional love song to life, will teach us that every path is impossible until someone completes it.
