About the book

One Night Stand, a violent and chilling thriller praised by The New York Times and USA Today, is the new work by Heather Gudenkauf, author of eight bestsellers and nominated for the prestigious Edgar Award for crime fiction.

Three stories converge in a thriller as exciting as it is violent:
● A crime novelist is finishing her latest book, isolated in an old country house in the middle of a snowstorm, when she hears the cry of a child dying of cold at her door.
● A mother and daughter live locked in a basement.
● Years ago, during a hot summer night, a man and his wife were murdered in cold blood in their own home.

Review

Today I bring you a review of a book that has had me on tenterhooks since I started reading it: One Night Stand, by Heather Gudenkauf. It is a psychological thriller that intertwines three different stories, but they have a common link: terror.

The first story is about Wylie, a true crime writer who has holed up in a cabin in the Iowa countryside to finish her new book. One night, in the middle of a snowstorm, she hears a knock on the door and finds a small boy, frozen and scared. Wylie takes him into her home, but soon realizes that she is neither alone nor safe. Someone else is lurking in the area, and it seems to have something to do with the cabin’s dark past.

The second story is that of Allison and her daughter Zoe, who have been locked in a basement for years by a man who mistreats and tortures them. Allison has given up hope of escaping, but Zoe does not give up and looks for a way to free herself and take revenge on her captor. Their only connection to the outside world is a radio that sometimes picks up a station.

The third story is about an unsolved crime that occurred years ago on a farm near Wylie’s cabin. A couple was murdered in cold blood in their own home, and only two girls managed to survive by hiding in the corn fields. One of them was Wylie’s best friend, and the other was a stranger. What happened that night? Who was the killer? How does it relate to the present?

One Night Stand is a book that grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let go until the end. The author knows how to create an oppressive and distressing atmosphere, and gradually reveals the secrets and surprises hidden in each story. The characters are very well constructed and make you empathize with them and their suffering. The pace is fast-paced and the tension increases until it reaches a shocking and unexpected ending.

If you like psychological thrillers with a touch of horror, I highly recommend this book. Heather Gudenkauf is a master of the genre and knows how to keep the reader hooked and on edge. One Night Stand is a novel that will not leave you indifferent or let you sleep peacefully.
