A dark kingdom
by Alejandro Hermosilla

The new novel by Alejandro Hermosilla, author of ‘The Gardener’ (Jekyll & Jill, 2018)

Two architects (father and son) venture into the dark forests on the outskirts of their city to supervise the renovations and works they direct in the mansions and palaces of a landscaper, a duke, a pianist and a writer. With these apparently simple elements, Alejandro Hermosilla weaves a novel similar to an expressionist fresco that reflects both the schizophrenia of the contemporary world, as well as the two great pandemics – loneliness and selfishness – that are currently spreading across the western landscapes. At the same time, he makes a furious analysis of the state of art, poetry and culture, behind which echoes of the work of Nikolai Gogol, Franz Kafka or Thomas Bernhard can be perceived.

Alejandro Hermosilla (Cartagena, 1974) European Doctor in Comparative Literature from the University of Murcia. He has published various essays on the narrative of Abel Posse, Ernesto Sábato, Sergio Pitol and Mario Bellatin and a couple of novels, Martillo (2014) and Bruja (2016). He has taught classes and given lectures and courses at universities in Bulgaria, the USA, Mexico and Spain. He has written articles on art, music, film, comics and literature for various magazines.
