William Goldman born in 1931. Lives in New York. He is a novelist, playwright and screenwriter, work for which he has received two Oscars: for best original screenplay for Two Men and a Destiny and for best adapted screenplay for All the President’s Men. He has also won two Edgar Awards for best film script, awarded by the Mystery Writers of America association, for Harper in 1967 and for Magic in 1979, the latter adapted from a novel that he himself wrote in 1976. As he himself explains in his memoir, The Adventures of a Screenwriter in Hollywood, began writing after taking a creative writing course in college. He initially had no intention of becoming a screenwriter. What interested him most was poetry, short stories and novels. William Goldman published five novels and three of his plays were produced on Broadway before he began writing screenplays. Until the death of his first agent he wrote almost exclusively literary fiction, but from then on he began writing thrillers, the first of which was Marathon Man. S. Morgenstern is both a pseudonym and a narrative tool invented by Goldman to add a second level of reading to his novel The Princess Bride. Goldman tells us that his novel is an abridged version of a book written by Morgenstern, an author born in the equally fictional country of Florin. The name is a tribute to Johann Carl Simon Morgenstern, who coined the term Bildungsroman to describe the formative story genre.
